September Book Club - 20th Sept at Liz's

Only 5 of us last night.

I forgot to bring pen and paper with me and didn't write down what people had read over the summer.  Fail.

We did have a lovely supper though, a delicious deep-filled mushroom torte from a recipe STOLEN by Liz! Followed by an exotic fruit salad and panacotta with raspberry nipples on the top, served in lovely little coffee cup which were a legitimate steal from the Oxfam shop.

Our suggestions for the next period are on the side.

Next meeting on 17th October at my house.  7.30pm and we are reading 'The Marriage Plot'.

July book club - held on 25 July

We met a Vicky's on 25th July and discussed Pure by Andrew Miller.

We had a lovely supper but as it's now been so long since then, I can't actually remember what we had to eat.  If I'd been a more efficient blogger, I'd have done it at the time and it would be here for all to see.  And for eternity. Presumably.

Most of us liked this book, Rosie had even finished it before everyone and she calls herself a slow reader.  People liked the theme which was about the removal of the bones from the old graveyard from Les Halles to the catacombs in Paris.  It had special resonance for Louise who'd recently been to Paris and possibly the catacombs.  Apparently events in the book lead up to the revolution but I can't comment on this because I haven't finished it yet.. and probably won't as I didn't really enjoy it.

Free read in the summer.

25 June 2012 Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.

We met at Angela's. Delicious tagine - cooked and served in a tagine. The consensus was that it was moving but probably would have gained something without the special effects.

I think I've got everything up to date now and that it's all in the right order!  Will endeavour to be a better blogger.

Pure
Next book....Andrew Miller 'Pure'.

At Vicky's on 25th July.

3rd May A Game of Hide and Seek

Book club at Rosie's.
This was by Elizabeth Taylor (not, not that one).  Most people enjoyed it but felt it was slow to start.  However there's an interesting review of the book on this blog
http://bookssnob.wordpress.com/

and Elizabeth Taylor will be the subject of James Naughtie's Book Club on Sunday 1st July

28th March 2012 Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

Most people really liked this book and felt it gave another slant to Dickensian London.  Most people enjoyed the story and really liked the twists and turns.

(I hated this book - I write the blog so I can put my comments and I can't actually remember the discussion in detail  )

7th Feb 2012 Reading Lolita in Tehran

Mixed reaction to this book.  It was quite hard going at times with large tracts of lit crit which I for one felt was a bit showy off. Some of us felt it wouldn't have inspired one to go to uni to read English. It did give some flavour of the life of women in Tehran.
